About the job
We are a leading provider of blockchain technologies and infrastructure built on top of Bitcoin. Our mission is to create new technology rails for the financial industry and its four key pillars: storage and management of wealth, borrowing and lending, trading, and payments—and to make Bitcoin useful and accessible for everyone. The company was founded by Dr. Adam Back, one of the Bitcoin pioneers and the inventor of the Hashcash algorithm. Join us and be at the forefront of the financial revolution!
Blockstream seeks a visionary CMO to lead marketing strategy and operations, aligning all product lines—consumer-focused applications and wallets, enterprise solutions, Layer‑2 infrastructure products, and asset management—under a unified growth narrative. This executive will report directly to the COO/President and spearhead both organic expansion and M&A integration to position Blockstream as the go‑to provider of Bitcoin-based infrastructure. The role involves close collaboration with the company’s business executives responsible for each product segment, and you’ll be expected to work from our Menlo Park office 30% of the time.
What You’ll Be Doing (Responsibilities):
Strategic Leadership & Brand Positioning
- Develop a cohesive, multichannel marketing strategy that elevates Blockstream as the premier Bitcoin infrastructure provider for enterprises, governments, and consumers.
- Conduct market intelligence, segmentation, and competitive analyses—tracking industry dynamics, incumbent players, emerging technology trends, and the regulatory landscape.
- Refine brand messaging, tone, and positioning across diverse audiences: enterprise, developer, institutional, and retail.
Unified Demand Generation
- Oversee acquisition, engagement, and retention across all three main lines of business: consumer, enterprise, and asset management.
- Deploy high-performance campaigns across digital channels (Google, LinkedIn, X/Twitter, Reddit, TikTok), programmatic advertising, email, SEO/SEM, and events.
- Advance content, community, and influencer programs tailored to blockchain and Bitcoin, with a focus on trust-building.
M&A Marketing Integration
- Lead post-acquisition marketing integration: rebranding, product messaging harmonization, and channel rationalization.
- Develop coordinated cross-product launch and communication plans to capitalize on synergies.
Marketing Operations & Measurement
- Define KPIs such as share of voice, lead generation, CAC, LTV, activation rates, and retention.
- Establish an advanced marketing tech stack (CRM, analytics, marketing automation), and build data-driven funnels and attribution reporting.
- Guide A/B testing across campaigns, landing pages, onboarding flows, and in-app prompts.
Thought Leadership & PR
- Drive executive-level PR and media strategies, showcasing company wins, product launches, and the significance of our infrastructure (e.g., Liquid, Lightning).
- Position Blockstream leadership as influential voices in Bitcoin, policy circles, research forums, and developer conferences.
- Oversee whitepapers, case studies, partner narratives, and speaking opportunities.
Team Development & Collaboration
- Build and lead a high-performing global marketing team spanning brand, digital, ABM, PR, product, partner, and content functions.
- Collaborate closely with Product, Engineering, Sales, BizDev, and Finance to align go-to-market and corporate goals.
- Serve as a mentor and culture carrier within Blockstream.
What We Look For in You (Required Qualifications):
- Location: Preferably Bay Area, hybrid; expected to work from our Menlo Park office 30% of the time.
- Leadership: 10+ years of experience leading marketing teams at B2B2C technology, fintech, or blockchain companies.
- Domain Expertise: Deep understanding of Bitcoin, Layer‑2 networks (e.g., Lightning), DeFi, and sidechains; ability to articulate protocol differentiation.
- Strategic & Data-Driven: Experience with market segmentation, competitive mapping, product positioning, and M&A brand integration.
- Demand Generation Expertise: Mastery of acquisition, lifecycle, funnel optimization, channel mix, and collaboration with performance teams.
- Operational Excellence: Strong analytical skills in dashboards, CRM, and MarTech stack implementation.
- Communications: Exceptional writing, public speaking, PR, and marketing agency oversight skills; experience collaborating with IR.
- Organizational Leadership: Proven track record of building, mentoring, and scaling global teams in high-growth, geographically distributed environments.
- Collaboration & Influence: Comfortable presenting to the Board, investors, and C‑suite; strong cross-functional collaboration. Experience with public companies is a big plus.
- Education: MBA or equivalent advanced business degree (preferred).
Blockstream stands at a strategic inflection point in the evolution of Bitcoin infrastructure. As a vertically integrated, Bitcoin-first company with products spanning wallets, sidechains, Lightning infrastructure, mining, and institutional asset management, Blockstream offers a rare opportunity for a Chief Marketing Officer to shape the narrative of how Bitcoin becomes the backbone of future finance.
With roots in cryptographic research and a reputation earned through core protocol contributions, the company brings unmatched technical credibility — but now it must pair that credibility with modern go-to-market execution.
As regulatory frameworks solidify, institutions move from exploration to adoption, and Lightning-powered commerce begins to scale, Blockstream is poised to expand far beyond its historical developer base.
This analysis is designed to help prospective CMOs assess the true opportunity: the strengths to leverage, the constraints to navigate, and the external tailwinds that could turn this into a category-defining brand.
With customers ranging from retail holders to Fortune 500 banks, the marketing challenge here is as nuanced as it is exciting.
What follows is a structured analysis grounded in Blockstream’s unique position, the competitive landscape in the U.S. and Canada, and the strategic demands of leading marketing across five key dimensions: brand positioning, demand generation, M&A integration, marketing ops, and public relations.
Strengths (Internal Capabilities)
- Pioneering Bitcoin Credibility (Brand Leadership & PR): Blockstream enjoys strong technical credibility as a Bitcoin pioneer. Co-founded by Dr. Adam Back, the company’s reputation gives it trust within the crypto community. This first-mover advantage reinforces Blockstream’s brand leadership and bolsters its thought leadership in public discourse.
- Developer Community Trust (Brand Positioning): Blockstream’s deep open-source commitment has fostered loyal developer relationships. Its contributions to Bitcoin and Lightning (e.g. Core Lightning) have earned respect, which can be leveraged for brand advocacy and technical thought leadership content.
- Institutional Partnerships & Client Base (Demand Generation & Brand): The company has established high-quality partnerships with banks, exchanges, and fintechs, providing a strong foundation for account-based marketing and customer references.
- Diverse Bitcoin Product Ecosystem: Blockstream operates a broad product stack: consumer (Green, Jade), enterprise (Liquid, Lightning), and institutional (BAM). This diversity enables cross-promotion and a unified platform story (“The Future of Finance Runs on Bitcoin”).
- Robust Funding and R&D Investment: Blockstream has unicorn status and raised ~$700M to date. A recent $210M financing allows investment in marketing operations and signals investor confidence — a PR asset for trust building.
- Unique Infrastructure Assets (Innovation Reputation): Projects like Spondoolies (ASICs), Greenlight (Lightning), and Blockstream Satellite offer marketing and storytelling advantages that few competitors can match.
Weaknesses (Internal Limitations)
- Highly Technical Brand – Limited Mainstream Awareness: While credible among insiders, Blockstream’s brand remains unknown to broader fintech and enterprise audiences. The technical nature of the company limits accessible messaging.
- Fragmented Product Messaging: Lack of a unified narrative across Liquid, Green, Jade, and BAM has led to confusion. A recent shift to “Future of Finance Runs on Bitcoin” marks progress, but legacy fragmentation remains a challenge.
- Strained Marketing Focus Across Segments: The marketing team must simultaneously serve consumer, developer, and institutional audiences. This creates dilution and forces trade-offs in focus, tooling, and strategy.
- Underdeveloped Marketing Operations: Limited CRM, analytics, and automation tooling constrain attribution, demand forecasting, and campaign performance management.
- Limited Consumer Market Penetration: Despite good product design, Green and Jade trail behind competitors like Ledger and Trezor. Marketing adoption in the consumer segment is sub-scale.
- Bitcoin-Only Focus: While a point of pride, the exclusive focus on Bitcoin limits adoption among users looking for multi-chain, DeFi, or NFT ecosystems. This narrows market potential.
Opportunities (External Environment)
- Institutional Adoption Tailwinds (Unified Demand Gen): U.S. Bitcoin ETFs and Canadian crypto-friendly policies are driving institutional inflows. Blockstream can ride this wave by promoting BAM, Liquid, and custody integrations.
- Crypto Adoption & Use-Case Expansion: Real-world problems like cross-border payments, stablecoin rails, and merchant micropayments create product–market fit for Liquid and Greenlight. Broader public adoption strengthens this case.
- New Institutional Products & Revenue Streams: BAM launches open new channels. Marketing can position these offerings to investment advisors, fintech platforms, and crypto hedge funds.
- Consolidation and M&A Prospects: Blockstream’s track record with Spondoolies and Komainu suggests further M&A opportunities. A strong CMO can lead messaging, post-merger integration, and customer communications.
- Public Relations & Thought Leadership Opportunities: The regulatory and media landscape is ripe for credibility-based storytelling. Blockstream’s executives and researchers offer a PR goldmine — particularly in the current "Bitcoin over crypto" narrative environment.
Threats (External Challenges)
- Regulatory Complexity and Uncertainty: U.S. and Canadian regulators remain unpredictable. Marketing around financial products, crypto wallets, or Lightning rails may trigger scrutiny. Legal-compliance integration is critical to campaign review cycles.
- Market Volatility and Crypto Cycles: Bitcoin boom-and-bust cycles dramatically affect sentiment and marketing ROI. A prolonged downturn could kill momentum and budgets — and demand steady PR crisis handling.
- Intense Competition (Technology and Marketing): Lightning Labs, Coinbase Cloud, Ledger, and Layer 1s all target Blockstream’s segments. Larger wallets have bigger ad budgets and market share, while agile startups move faster on integrations and partnerships.
- Data Privacy and Evolving Digital Marketing Trends: Cookie deprecation, GDPR/CCPA, and ad platform changes constrain marketing operations. Without advanced marketing infrastructure and first-party data strategies, Blockstream may struggle with demand attribution.
- Macro Economic and Geopolitical Risks: Bitcoin mining's environmental footprint, inflation, energy policy, and anti-crypto sentiment in legislatures may all undercut the company’s message or lead to adverse regulation and brand reputational risks.
KEY TAKEAWAYS:
For a proven marketing executive seeking to operate at the bleeding edge of digital finance, the Blockstream opportunity is uniquely multidimensional.
It is not a conventional CMO role; it is a chance to define how institutional trust, open-source infrastructure, and programmable money converge under a single brand.
The company’s strengths — deep technical authority, a diverse Bitcoin-native product suite, and strong institutional credibility — form a formidable foundation. But success in this role will require transforming a fragmented set of technically advanced products into a coherent, emotionally resonant narrative that speaks to very different audiences: developers, regulators, enterprises, and consumers.
The opportunity is big. The stakes are bigger.
Blockstream is not chasing crypto hype — it is building foundational infrastructure with long time horizons. This creates a high-leverage moment for a CMO who can translate complexity into clarity, bridge technical excellence with market accessibility, and amplify thought leadership across media, conferences, and enterprise partnerships.
With institutional Bitcoin adoption accelerating, and with the company’s asset management arm (BAM) just launched, timing is on Blockstream’s side.
Yet the threats — from regulatory constraints to market volatility and intense competition — are real.
Success will depend on aligning brand strategy with attribution infrastructure, embedding compliance into content workflows, and preparing the organization for proactive crisis communication.
In short: This is a mission-critical role at the frontier of finance. For the right CMO, it represents an extraordinary opportunity to help Bitcoin fulfill its original promise — and to make Blockstream the brand that gets credit for making it happen.
